First, always check with your instructor! But yes, there will be times when using search engines like Bing, DuckDuckGo, and Google will be your best bets for your research.
Some scenarios where you might need to use a Google (or etc.) search instead of the library resources:
- When you need to find online magazine or news content that hasn't been indexed by a database yet.
- When you just need to get an initial understanding for the topic (like to collect keywords to use when searching, etc.)
- When you are looking for blog post content (maybe your instructor wants you to find opinions online about a topic)
Here is a presentation by a former TCC Librarian on how best to use Google for scholarly research.
